After completing my Yoga Teacher Training at Ananda Sangha, I started taking yoga sessions at the Gurgaon centre. A few months later, after gaining some experience, I decided to spread the joy of Ananda Yoga in my locality. I planned to devote time to yoga classes once my kids left for school in the morning. All enthusiastic, I got the flyers printed and distributed in the nearby areas. Soon I got a perfect opportunity: a group of ladies from a neighboring society were keen on taking yoga classes. But along came an obstacle, they wanted the class at 5 A.M.

Traditionally, early morning before sunrise is said to be the perfect time for yogic practices. In our meditation classes at Ananda Sangha, we share that Brahma Muhurta Sandhya 4- 6 A.M. is the ideal time for meditation practice as the mind is calm and the vibrations are high. Personally, I tried to follow the tradition of getting up early for yoga and meditation but failed to do so. So, taking 5 A.M. yoga sessions seemed a distant possibility.

Yoga Early Morning

Even though my mind voted against it, something within me urged to take up this challenge. Thanks to the social media upsurge in today’s times, motivation is never far away. While going through my social media feeds, I stumbled upon a very inspiring quote by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a great Indian poet. His quote read “Mann ka ho tho achcha, Na ho tho jyada achcha”, meaning when things happen your way it’s good, but if they don’t, it’s even better, for they are happening as per the divine will, and God knows best for us.

So I decided to start the classes. Soon I realized that if I went to bed on time, getting up early in the morning wasn’t so difficult. It was just a matter of disciplining myself. Further, the experience of these classes helped me carry on. We would practice outside in a lawn when it was still dark, pleasant and the environment still and serene. The entire setting enabled us to smoothly flow in the practice, leaving us rejuvenated and full of joy by the end of our session, and the beginning of a new day.

5 A.M. is indeed the perfect time for yoga, especially Ananda Yoga, where the primary purpose is to take the practitioner to a deeper state of awareness. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I started going 15 minutes early to meditate before the class. The opportunity was a blessing in disguise, it helped me to get into the habit of getting up early in the morning. Since then, even when I don’t have to take an early class, I try to get up soon to be in that quiet space and absorb the high vibrations.

In Ananda Yoga, we have an affirmation for Virabhadrasana I (Warrior Pose 1) “I attune my will to the source of all power”. Our plans don’t always work out. Often we need to accept situations the way they are. Instead of resisting, if we align our will with the cosmos, things work out for the best.
